Starting at age 50, men and women who don’t have a history of polyps or colon cancer should have a colonoscopy every 10 years. To encourage patients to get this vital test, Gatto’s Restaurants is giving patients a $20 Gift Certificate when they have a screening colonoscopy at Silver Cross Hospital between March 1 to Sept. 30, 2015. A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls
A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls
FREE Classes For New Lenox Seniors Offered
Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you.
Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.
A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.
The New Lenox Safe Communities America Coalition, through collaborative partnerships with member organizations, is offering (THREE) Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls Classes as follows:

Burning Your Heartburn & Preventing Esophageal Cancer
Acid reflux or chronic heartburn can be more than an inconvenience. Heartburn, acid reflux (also referred to as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD), and Barrett’s esophagus are digestive disorders that if left untreated can progress to more serious conditions. Barrett’s esophagus patients have a 5% chance of the disease progressing to esophageal cancer over a 10-year span. Dr. Kamran Ayub, Medical Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Center at Silver Cross Hospital, will discuss the risks and treatment options for these conditions on Tuesday, April 14. The free Burning Your Heartburn & Preventing Esophageal Cancer program will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. "What Can I Say to Convince Them to Quit?"
The Village of New Lenox and its Safe Communities America Coalition, in partnership with Rosecrance Treatment Centers, will be hosting a FREE workshop for families struggling with substance abuse. The workshop, entitled “What Can I Say to Convince Them to Quit?” will be held in the Community Room at the New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway, on Thursday April 30th at 7:00pm.
Substance abuse affects the whole family, not just the abuser. Sometimes the best course of action for those closest to the abuser is to educate themselves about the dynamics of addiction and help the abuser see and feel the negative consequences of his or her behavior.
Instructor David Lee is the founder of Indiana-based Intervention Services and Technologies, Inc., the largest intervention service provider in North America. Lee has more than 10 years of experience in Interventions, addiction counseling, family systems and recovery.
“What Can I Say to Convince Them to Quit?” is available for family members who are concerned about a loved one’s substance use. Attendees will learn ways of interacting with their loved one regarding the use of substances. Participants will hear a personal story of addiction and recovery; learn what to avoid when talking with a substance abuser; and connect with helpful resources for support, intervention and treatment.
To register for this FREE workshop, go to www.rosecrance.org/events. For additional information or questions, contact Daniel Martin, Public Safety Division Chief at the New Lenox Police Department, (815) 462-6128 or via email at dmartin@newlenox.net.
