“Building Healthy Relationships with Ourselves and Others”
In Support of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
On Monday, February 5, 2024, between 4:00pm and 5:00pm, the New Lenox Safe Community Coalition, in partnership with Guardian Angel Community Services, is offering a FREE screening and discussion entitled “Building Healthy Relationships with Ourselves and Others.” This event will be held in the Community Room at the New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway, New Lenox, IL. Pizza and beverages will be provided to everyone in attendance. No registration needed.
This event is geared towards teens, although everyone is welcome to attend.
“Building Healthy Relationships with Ourselves and Others” is rooted in providing teens with tools that they can use to ensure the relationships they are building are healthy. It will also provide them with information on how to build their self-respect and self-esteem. During this event, Guardian Angel Community Services' Sexual Assault Service Center (SASC) will show a film from the One Love Foundation, which will utilize an example of a relationship to depict different healthy and unhealthy behaviors. A discussion will follow to address how all relationships live on a spectrum from healthy to abusive with unhealthy living somewhere in between. The discussion will explore what type of characteristics accompany each type of relationship, with a focus on warning signs that are often common in teen dating violence. The main goal of the discussion will be teaching attendees how to build healthy relationships and what to do if a relationship becomes unhealthy, or even abusive. The discussion will also allow attendees to discuss methods that can be utilized to support someone who might be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship.
To wrap-up the discussion, attendees are welcomed to partake in a self-care craft that will provide an opportunity for them to utilize skills to build self-respect and self-esteem.
Informational tables from Guardian Angel Community Services will be available with handouts that provide additional information on what teen dating violence is and how to support individuals in unhealthy and abusive relationships.
